What Does the Bible Say About..Associating With Non-Christians?

Are Christians suppose to be friends with non Christians because in the bible it says that you should cause you can teach them and maybe bring them to God. But it also says to stay away from them??? I'm so confused.

Answer

Paul had something to say to the church at Corinth about associating with others. "I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person." (1 Cor 5:9-13) To put it into more modern English, he is saying, "I wrote a letter to you not to associate with sexually immoral people. But I don't mean the immoral of the world, or covetous, … ; for then you would have to leave the world. What I was writing about was if a Christian is one of these things, don't associate with them. I don't judge your associations with others in the world, and you are the judge of your associations in the church. God judges those others, so put away the wicked from among you."

We have to associate with people in the world. Not everyone can or should be a hermit; otherwise how will the world see Christ in us? We can't teach the world if we don't associate with them. Paul says, however, to get the wicked, unrepentant sinners out of our midst so they don't bring us down or cause the world to misjudge the church.
