What Does the Bible Say About..Compassion?

There is a lady in my church that states there is no compassion in the church. How can I help her?

Answer

My experience has been that those who say there is no compassion in the church, or the church is not friendly enough, or nobody cares, are those who don’t show compassion, friendliness, or caring. There are, of course, exceptions to that rule, but for the most part it holds true. People who are unfriendly only see the unfriendliness. Those who are not compassionate don’t see the acts of compassion that others see.

How can you help a person who doesn’t see compassion in the church? The easiest way is to go overboard in showing compassion to that person. Besides making them a special object of your compassion, enlist those you know who are compassionate in the church to ask her to come along when they are going to do compassionate acts. Since many Christians do such things without blowing their trumpets, so to speak, she may just not realize how much is actually done by compassionate people. Asking her along will help her to see the compassion, and may help her to learn to show it herself.

Regardless of how compassionate people in the church are, there is all compassion in the church. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten son that whosoever believes on him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) Whether anyone else in the church shows compassion, the head of the church gave his life because of his compassion for those who were undeserving of it.
