What Does the Bible Say About..Confirming God's Word?

What does the Bible say about waiting for confirmation once you believe you have heard something from God. Do you need to wait for God to confirm what you believe He told you through someone else?

Answer

The only confirmation you need to know if something is from God is if you can find it in the Bible. If it is not in the Bible, it is not from God. “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” (2 Peter 1:3) “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:8-9)

As I have indicated in previous answers (What Does the Bible Say About..Dreams and Visions Ending), God no longer speaks to man directly, but only through the Bible. Anyone who claims to have had a special revelation from God would have to show that his revelation is more trustworthy than other claims of special revelation with which he disagrees. That is, he would have to show why his revelation is valid and those of Mohammed, Joseph Smith, Oral Roberts, and countless others are not.

Since any special vision or communication other than through the Bible is probably not from God, you need no further confirmation from anyone else. You can know that if it doesn’t agree with the communication that God has given us in the Bible, you can ignore it or act on it as if it was your own idea.
