What Does the Bible Say About..Dancing?

Is it wrong to dance?

Answer

The Bible does not condemn dancing. In fact, a number of people are said to have danced, including Moses’ sister Miriam (Exodus 15:20) and King David (2 Samuel 6:14-16). David got in trouble with one of his wives for dancing, but not with God.

I must point out, however, that the dancing in the Bible was almost exclusively solo dancing or dancing in groups of the same gender. There was little or no dancing like the modern ballroom dance where men danced with women.

Whether it would be wrong to dance with the opposite sex would depend on the individuals. If it is dancing in a way that would cause one or both to be tempted to sin, then it would be clearly wrong. If it causes somebody else to dance, who would not have done so but for your example, and that person is tempted to sin, then it is wrong. (Romans 14 and other passages). If nobody is tempted as a result of the dancing, then somebody would be hard pressed to show that it is biblically wrong.
