What Does the Bible Say About..Jesus In Hell?

Well if it is true about Satan never having any power over hell, than why did Jesus go to hell after he was crucified? I always thought the reason he went to hell was because when Adam and Eve sinned, they gave Satan their power. I am just mainly confused on why Jesus had to go to hell for three days if God has always had control over hell.

In the King James Version of the New Testament there are two words most commonly translated hell. One is “gehenna,” which is a place of fire and torment. This is the word Jesus uses when speaking of the eventual fate of the lost. This is probably what Jesus was talking about when he said, “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41) Another word is “hades,” which generally means the place souls of the dead go until the final judgement. While there seems to be an area of this realm that includes torment, there also seems to be a place of comfort for those who will eventually be judged for heaven.

When Peter quotes the Psalm that, when applied to Jesus, says his soul did not stay in hell, the word used is hades. The original Hebrew of the psalm uses the word “sheol.” In both the Hebrew and Greek, a more proper translation might be “the grave.” Thus, Jesus did not go into the place of torment that is created for the Devil, but merely was in the grave. After three days he was raised from the grave. It is as simple as that.
