What Does the Bible Say About..Stoning Homosexuals?

Leviticus 20:13 talks about homosexuality and they shall be put to death, but by who's hands in Old Testament? It was by stoning to death, and I heard that in the New Testament it follows the same principle; but in New Testament someone with law status was the one who gave the permission to punish them by death. Is all this true and if not could you clarify for me? Thanks.

Answer

The New Testament does not provide any physical punishment for homosexual acts. Although it is a sin to commit such acts, the only punishment will come after the final judgement, when all sinners will be separated from God and heaven.

The Law of Moses was to the Jewish nation, and was laws for that nation. As such, the nation had the power to punish those who broke that law, in this case by stoning. The kingdom of Jesus, the church, is a spiritual kingdom rather than a physical one. That kingdom, then, would not have the right to impose physical penalties on its members. Even if it had that right, it would only have the jurisdiction over those who are in the kingdom. Since those who commit homosexual acts cannot be part of the kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:9-11), the kingdom has no authority to punish them. Those who are in the church who commit such acts are forgiven, and so no punishment accrues to them. Nobody, then, has the authority to stone those who commit homosexual acts today.
