What Does the Bible Say About..School Work Taking Up Time?

Being in college takes a lot of studying and time to do homework, and extracurricular activities (depending on your major) and appointments. So what does the bible say about school, and all the time that is required to be successful in school. Doesn't it take away from the time we should be devoting to studying the Bible and fellowshipping with God?

Answer

Certainly college studies can take a lot of time. “Of the making of books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.” (Ecclesiastes 12:12)

Since the concept of college as we know it was little known in biblical times, the Bible doesn’t say much about it. Throughout time, though, men have studied trades or professions, and the Bible doesn’t condemn that.

If you feel that you have no time left after all your study and activities, there may be some things you need to reevaluate. Are your extracurricular activities more important to you than studying the Bible? Then perhaps you need to determine whether they are necessary or just a distraction. If you think your studies are distracting you from studying God’s word, are you perhaps more suited to devoting full time to study to be a preacher or Bible teacher? I guess it all comes down to “seek ye first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33) If your priorities are following God, he will see that you have time for study and prayer and yet be able to get through your other studies.
