What Does the Bible Say About...Teenage Sex?

I am asking for information concerning teen and sexual relations. I have three teenagers which my husband and I are trying to point to examples of what they are do with their lives.

Answer

It has been said that Proverbs, chapters 1-7 is a handbook on dealing with gangs and teenage problems. Chapter 5 especially deals with the idea of sexual relations. Basically, Solomon advises his son (or daughter) to avoid sexual relations outside of marriage. He speaks particularly of prostitutes, but at that time any woman who tempted a man to engage in sexual relations outside of marriage was considered a prostitute. The rest of those chapters are good advice on dealing with peer pressure, violence, sexuality, and even drugs.

The principal passage in the New Testament, other than those saying that adulterers will not enter the kingdom of heaven, is Hebrews 13:4. “Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers [pimps in today’s English] and adulterers God will judge.”

One of the best biblical examples would be Joseph. He had been sold into slavery in Egypt. He became the slave of, and eventually the master of the household of, Potiphar, a high ranking civil servant. Potiphar’s wife desired Joseph and tried to seduce him. One day when they were in the house together, alone, she grabbed him and asked him to have sex with her. He told her that he would not violate her husband’s trust and that he would not sin against God. When she grabbed his outer garment he slipped out of it and ran. She used the garment as evidence that he had tried to rape her. Rather than succumb to her temptations, Joseph was willing to go to jail. (Genesis 39)
