What Does the Bible Say About..The Prayer of Revealing?

Lately my friends have me telling me to pray the prayer of uncovering also known as the prayer of revealing. They explain to me if I ask God will uncover things about people and reveal what I need to know about my daughter and her boyfriend etc. I tried to explain to them that this was false doctrine but I don't think I was too convincing. Can you help me?

Answer

I have never heard of a "prayer of uncovering" or "revealing." It seems to me that it might fall under the category of prayers that God will not answer. "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." (James 4:3) On the other hand, if you are praying about a genuine concern and not selfishly, God may answer such a prayer. If you are worried about what is happening between your daughter and her boyfriend you should be praying about it, but not necessarily that you find out about it. The best way to find that out is not to talk to God, but to talk to your daughter.

On the face of it, it does sound like a false doctrine. But it may not be, exactly. It might be wise to find out from your friends what scriptures they are using to justify this doctrine. Then read the scriptures in their context for yourself to determine whether it is false or not.
